St. Paul's Episcopal Church Weekly Update

Today is Consecration Sunday Please bring your pledge cards to church and place them into an offering basket during the Offertory at your service. We will ask blessing upon them at the altar. If you already delivered your card, we will include it in the altar blessing basket.

 

St Paul's 2012 Annual Meeting TODAY in the church at 10:15 am, and will conclude before the 10:45 service begins. Please come! Vestry elections will be held, and the annual Treasurer's Report given. We need a quorum!

Outgoing Vestry members are Cathy McLean, Sr. Warden; Carole Meghreblian, Linda Nicholson, Ray Davila. We thank them very much for their faithful and caring service.

Nominations for Vestry closed in early January. Your Nominating Committee for the 2012 Vestry elections presents the following slate for election at the Annual Meeting, all for the usual three year terms: David Stowell, Linda Nicholson, Louise Tucker, Su Szen. A brief bio of each is included with this Update.

 

St Paul's Cookbooks If you have missed getting a copy, they will be available at coffee hours. See Marion Kennedy, Barbara Kling or Marcie Cragg.

 

Every Sunday Food Collection 2012 started out great considering there was no reminder of our continuing ministry to the hungry of SW FL. 27 bags of groceries have been donated year to date to local food banks. All are invited to bring nonperishable food when you come to Sunday services. There is a huge gray tub in the narthex to receive your donations. Outreach chair Tom LaMarca and his team deliver the food to local food banks.

 

Epiphany Study Series Tuesday 6:30 - 8:00 p.m. in Parish Hall.This series is in progress, but you are welcome to join the conversation at anytime. Our guest on Jan 31 will be The Rev. Al Pike, Benedictines of the Good Shepherd. RSVP to church office for sessions is appreciated but not required. No cost. Please call the church office at 643-0197, 9 a.m. - 1 p.m.

 

ECW February 1 Meeting will be a "Fun Day." We will compile bags of toilet articles for "Abused Women" (Please bring donations) - have a short business meeting then BRING ON THE GAMES. All kinds of games will be available - cards, dominos, Rummikub, Yahtzee, etc or bring your own. We will have a place for everyone and let's have some fun and get to know each other better. Coffee hr. 9:30am Meeting 10 am.

 

Movie Night Thursday February 2, 7-9 p.m. We will enjoy Mitch Albom's Have a Little Faith. There is no fee and refreshments will be served.

 

Pancake Breakfast Saturday Feb 4 at the Market from 8 - 11 a.m. $5 for pancakes, sausage, fruit...

On Monday, Feb 6, please welcome Bridget Millsaps, who will fill in for Kelly in the St Paul's Office during Kelly's Maternity Leave Kelly's maternity leave begins Monday, Feb 20, so you have plenty of time to assure her of your prayers for her and her little girl-to-come. Bridget and Kelly will overlap for training purposes for two weeks (unless Baby Alderman decides to shorten that time!). When Bridget is here alone, our weekday office hours will begin and end more like 8:30 am - 12:30 pm, so she can get to her other job.

St Monica's offers Opportunity to Learn About the Tumaini [Hope] Fund Helping Aids Orphans in Tanzania Dinner Feb 8 at 6 pm. Very informative program follows. Call their office 591-4550 for reservation.

 

Common Ground of Naples presents "The Changing Role of Women in the Arab World", a lecture by Samar Jarrah, author of "Arab Voices Speak" and adjunct lecturer at U of S. Florida. Wed., February 8 at Unitarian Universalist, 6340 Napa Woods Way, reception 7 pm, Lecture 7:30 pm, Suggested Donation $15

Those interested in this lecture may also enjoy a subsequent Common Ground presentation: "The Arab Spring - A Year Later", by Richard Macken, Ph.D. in Near Eastern Studies and former Sr Analyst for Middle Eastern Affairs for a major international oil company and Foreign Service officer for US Dept of State. This lecture is Wed., Feb 29, also at Unitarian Universalist, with same times and suggested donation.

CIW asks your attendance at protest outside Trader Joe's during opening of their first FL store, in Naples, Sun Feb 12 at 2 pm. On 41 just south of Immokalee Road. CIW is the Coalition of Immokalee Farmworkers. Trader Joe's has ignored CIW pleas to join Publix,Yum Brands and other major food industry companies in signing a Fair Food accord to improve the situation of the Immoklaee tomato-pickers. Country Western Night Dinner & Line Dancing, Live Band Our very popular, always-sell-out evening returns this year Thursday, Feb 16, 5:30. Enjoy a BBQ rib dinner, and by popular demand, the country music of Pat King. Tickets $17.50. This is an event the community loves! St Paul's members have opportunity to buy tickets this Sunday after each service or during the week at the office, 9 - 1 (please have the $.50 change if at all possible). St Paul's thanks Lynne and Tom LaMarca and their team for making this event happen again this year!

 

Donations for Raffle Baskets for Country Western Night? The profits from country western night help subsidize entertainment at our free-will-offering parish dinners. So this fun night of heavy community attendance is important to our parish's activities the rest of the year.   Rosanna Lower (732-5087) is putting together raffle baskets, and would be very appreciative of your donations to fill the baskets. Possibilities include breakfast teas and biscuits, coffees, new books, wine, cheese, note paper or cards, nice toiletries. Also accepting donations of the baskets themselves.

Pianist Dr. Arnold Fletcher, a high season member of St Paul's and the husband of Mary Girling-Fletcher, presents a program of light classics and George Gershwin music at St Paul's, Thursday Feb 23 at 7 p.m. Dr. Fletcher earned bachelors and masters at Temple University and doctorate at U of Pa, then taught music in public schools. After serving in the armed forces during WWII he became professor of music and conducting at West Chester University and Dean of the Faculty (20 yr tenure there). Dr Fletcher has performed as solo and duo-pianist, orchestral soloist and chamber musician throughout the years. Freewill offering.

 

SONFilmFest.com Check out this website to learn about events at a faith-based film festival in Naples Feb 24-25. The festival is organized by several churches in Naples who are being helped by the non-profit film production company Reload Pictures. St Paul's has no inside info about this, and frankly we haven't yet checked the website ourselves, but wanted you to be able to check out for yourselves.

 

Parish Lunch will be Tues Feb 28. Specifics to come.

 

St Paul's Brick Given to The Collier County Freedom Memorial, which is being constructed at Freedom Park in Naples. It is a tribute to men and women who gave their lives in service to the victims of September 11, 2001 terrorists attacks. The Friday morning men's group recently hosted representatives of the Freedom Fund. A parish member has purchased a memorial brick on behalf of St. Paul's. It identifies St. Paul's Episcopal Church as donor and the message is "Thanks and God Bless". Meet Your Vestry Nominees:

 

LOUISE M. TUCKER

Born in Connecticut. Burton and I were married in 1996 and we relocated to Winterpark, Naples in 2010.

Prior to retirement I was supervisor for 20 years in manufacturing and worked for ESPN. I have scuba diving training and was a swimming instructor and lifeguard. My hobbies include knitting, crocheting, reading and of course cooking and baking.

We are blessed with 7 grandchildren ages ranging from 7 to 20 .

Burton and I have enjoyed doing work with God's Gardeners at St. Paul's and being part of St. Paul's family.

I look forward to continuing my commitment to St. Paul's and will work to the best of my ability to build on what all those before me have accomplished.

   

LINDA NICHOLSON

Born and raised in Wall, NJ. Was a member of St. Michael's Episcopal Church and served on the Altar Guild. Employment includes Allstate Insurance Company, Macy's, Monmouth Ocean Collection Service, and US Army Electronics Command at Fort Monmouth.

Have raised 2 daughters and one son and a proud grandmother of four.

Retired in 2004 and moved to Naples as a full time resident and worked at the Heron House Assisted Living Facility for 3 years.

I have presently been serving in a vacant Vestry position for the past year.

 

 SU SZEN

Was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul's Natick Church in Massachusetts, where I was the second female acolyte and was founding member of junior altar guild and also junior choir. Was one of the youngest vestry members at St. Paul's Natick and also served on the search committee.

I am a graduate of Wheaton College in Massachusetts and my primary employment has been in the finance fields (Marketing and Leasing).

My parents are Jean and Sherwood Szen. I look forward to serving on St. Paul's Vestry.

   

DAVID STOWELL

Was born in Burke County, N.C. Graduated from Oxford of Ohio on a 4 year scholarship as US Navy Midshipman. Was commissioned as Second Lt. UCMC and transferred to USMCR in 1966. After 1971 was employed at auto dealership, Bell Systems, NE Tel, At&T, Lucent Tech and retired in 1996. Moved to Naples in 2010.

My Church life has been blessed with serving on 5 different church vestries due to my travels. I have been an acolyte, choir boy, college youth leader, adult Sunday school teacher, teen group leader, Cursillo team member as well as Faith Alive team member.

I will do my best, God being my guide, for St. Paul's Vestry.
